Job Summary

Under direction of the Director of Nursing, The responsibilities, duties and job description of a wound care nurse are equally contributing and tough. They have to treat the patients under different settings, treat and manage the draining and traumatic wounds, pressure injury, tubes and fistulas and surgical incisions. Apart from this they also have to perform various other tasks involving basic nursing responsibilities and ethical duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. General Duties

  • The wound care nurses have to treat the skin reactions of the patients.
  • They have to treat or manage vascular ulcers, diabetic ulcers and all the other type of ulcers.
  • Treat all the types of open wounds, scars or skin infections.
  • Preventing the skin breakdown.
  • Taking proper measures to prevent the wound from getting worse and providing proper care to the patient.
  • Treating and assessing the draining wounds and fistulae problems.
  • Practicing the comprehensive wound management to control odor and performing causative factors.
  • The wound care nurse have to assess all the nutritional needs to the patient and providing the topical therapies to them.
  • They have to design pouch systems for draining fistulae and wounds of the patient.
  • Educating and supporting the patient morally and emotionally is also a part of the responsibilities of a wound care nurse.
  • They also have to provide emotional support to the patient’s family and educate them of all the necessary care and wound.
  • They have to learn to provide all the instructions to dress the wound and treat them in the right manner.
  • Implementing preventive measures in order to reduce the incidences of ulcers and wounds is also an important part of the duty of a wound care nurse.
  • Educating the patient about the wound or ulcers and make him aware of the treatments done on him.
  • Examining the wounds or problem of the patient and preparing the list of tests or examinations needed.
  • Providing proper setting to the patient to treat him.
  • Helping and assisting the wound care physician and giving him all the help needed.
  • To coordinate with the medical team to provide proper treatment to the patient.
  • Examining the recovery of the patient and altering the medications as needed.

  1. Quality Improvement
  • Knows the Nursing Department’s Key Performance Indicators and standards of compliance.
  • Participates and promotes continuous quality improvement activities, 
  • Participates in all nursing quality improvement initiatives including implementation and evaluation of action plans.
  • Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.
  • Ensures sustainability of compliance to JCIA and CBAHI accreditation standards.
  • Ensures on time reporting of incidents / accidents.
  • Participate in nursing councils and journal clubs

  1. Attitude & Professionalism
  • Observes all aspects of confidentiality.
  • Maintains good, professional working relationship with colleagues and other members of the multidisciplinary team. 
  • Resolves conflict promptly with appropriate documentation and reports to Head Nurse.
  • Follows appropriate chain of command for request, handling conflicts and misunderstanding in a positive manner to achieve satisfactory solution.
  1. Professional Development
  • Responsible for identifying own learning needs, seeking educational opportunities and utilizing available resources.
  • Remains current in the latest in nursing practice.
  • Participates in unit and departmental educational activities including preceptorship to nursing staff orientees. 
  • Completes relevant study programs, unit-specific and mandatory nursing competencies within the specified time frames, i.e. BCLS, Fire Training, etc.

  1. Patient and Family Education

  • Responsible to educate patients /families as per their needs and to implement their whole role regarding patient / family education process as mention in patient & family education policy and procedure including documentation in patient medical record.
  • They are knowledgeable about their essential role in patient and family education.
  • Involves the patient/families in plan of care and respects patients/families regarding their goals and choices of patient care.
  • Provides health promotion and health teaching thru methods appropriate to a patients’ developmental level, learning needs, readiness and ability to learn, language preference, culture and situations.
  • Allots time necessary to assess, plan implement and evaluate patient education provided to patients/families with appropriate documentation.

Education/Licensure

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing/ Diploma in Nursing. 
  • Current Licensure (RN) with a nursing governing body from country of origin.    
  • Professional Nursing License from Saudi Council for Health Specialties               
  • Desirable:   Post Graduate Certificate in wound care management.                   

Professional Experience

  • Minimum two years clinical experience related to current specialty. (Saudi new graduates are exempted).
  • Current working knowledge related to assigned field.
  • Demonstrates excellent skills on the safe and correct use of specific unit-based equipment’s,         

Competencies/Skills:

  • Be able to speak and understand basic Arabic Language.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural environment.
  • Exhibits professionalism and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good in customer care, able to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledgeable in computer applications.
  • He / She must be creative, flexible and have critical thinking skills. 
  • Must have good personal hygiene and be well groomed at all time
  • A wound care nurse must have skills in the development and implementation of appropriate treatment plans.
  • He / She should have a good clinical background and practical experience in nursing besides only theoretical knowledge.
  • He / She should have ability to work independently and to make high competent professional judgments and decisions
