Job Description:**Ubuntu Security Engineer Opportunity at Canonical**

Our Ubuntu platform is integral to numerous enterprise initiatives across public cloud, data science, artificial intelligence, engineering innovation, and the Internet of Things. As a pioneer in global distributed collaboration, Canonical fosters a dynamic environment with over 1200 professionals spanning more than 75 countries, emphasizing remote work. Teams convene in person two to four times annually in diverse global locations to strategize and align on execution. The company, founded and led with profitability and growth, is currently expanding its industry-leading software security team. The Ubuntu Security Engineer will contribute to safeguarding the open source community and Ubuntu users against emerging threats. **Responsibilities:**
As a member of the Ubuntu team, the successful candidate will collaborate with leading technologists to monitor, triage, respond to, and document vulnerabilities in open source software. This role involves close collaboration with internal teams and external partners to identify, prioritize, and track the progress of resolving security issues.
The role may also encompass various activities, including security assessments and code reviews, internal tool development, community engagement, security hardening, feature development, and participation in industry collaborations. International travel is required several times annually, typically for one-week durations. The successful candidate must demonstrate self-discipline and motivation to thrive in a globally distributed team.

**Key responsibilities include:**
* Analyzing, remediating, and testing vulnerabilities within Ubuntu packages.
* Maintaining accurate tracking of vulnerabilities in Ubuntu releases throughout their discovery, research, and resolution phases, utilizing internal software tools.
* Collaborating with Ubuntu community teams and upstream developers to exchange or develop vulnerability patches, ensuring the incorporation of optimal security features within Ubuntu.
* Conducting source code audits to identify potential vulnerabilities.
**Qualifications:**
* Thorough understanding of common security vulnerability categories and corresponding remediation techniques.
* Familiarity with coordinated vulnerability disclosure practices.
* Proficiency in open source development tools and methodologies.
* Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following programming languages: C, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, or PHP.
* Exceptional logic, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making capabilities.
* Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with team members and the Ubuntu community.
* Experience with Linux, preferably Debian or Ubuntu.
* Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and a strong sense of accountability.

* Ability to undertake international travel twice annually for company events, lasting up to two weeks.
