Job Description:**Option 1: (Formal)**
**Position Summary:**
The Emergency Department (ED) Duty Manager is responsible for the oversight and management of all daily operational activities within the Emergency Department during their designated shift. This individual ensures the seamless delivery of patient care, effective staff coordination, and strict adherence to all applicable hospital policies and established protocols. The ED Duty Manager collaborates closely with medical, nursing, and administrative personnel to optimize patient throughput, enhance the quality of care provided, and efficiently manage emergency situations.
**Key Responsibilities:**
1. **Operational Management:**
– Oversee and direct all day-to-day operations within the Emergency Department during the assigned shift.
– Ensure the efficient and timely flow of patients from triage through discharge or admission.
– Coordinate effectively with other hospital departments, including Radiology, Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit, and Inpatient Units, to facilitate seamless patient transitions.
– Monitor and manage bed availability within the ED, and liaise with inpatient units to facilitate patient admissions.
– Ensure strict compliance with all hospital policies, procedures, and relevant accreditation standards.
2. **Staff Supervision & Coordination:**
– Provide leadership and support to all ED staff, encompassing nurses, physicians, and support personnel.
– Assign duties and ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained, based on patient acuity and volume.
– Address staff concerns and provide real-time guidance during critical or challenging situations.
– Conduct comprehensive shift handovers and communicate key operational updates to incoming teams.
3. **Patient Safety & Quality of Care:**
– Ensure strict adherence to established triage protocols and the timely assessment of all patients.
– Monitor critical cases and facilitate rapid decision-making in collaboration with Emergency Department physicians.
– Enforce all infection control and patient safety protocols to maintain a safe environment.
– Address patient complaints or concerns in a professional and timely manner, escalating issues as necessary.
4. **Crisis & Incident Management:**
– Serve as the primary point of contact for all emergency situations and mass casualty incidents.
– Coordinate emergency response plans in collaboration with hospital leadership to ensure effective and coordinated action.
– Document and report all incidents, adverse events, and near misses in accordance with hospital policy.
5. **Administrative & Reporting Duties:**
– Maintain accurate and complete records of patient flow, staffing issues, and operational challenges encountered during the shift.
– Ensure proper documentation of all incidents, patient transfers, and medical interventions.
– Prepare comprehensive shift reports and communicate key operational updates to hospital management in a timely manner.
Skills:
Qualifications & Skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Healthcare Management, or a related field.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years in an emergency department, with leadership or supervisory experience.
